This project has been renamed ‘University House’

Tempe, Ariz.—Hub on Campus, an upscale 19-story apartment community built in close proximity to Arizona State University’s Tempe campus and a light rail station, is nearing its August 2013 delivery date, reports Beal | Derkenne Construction (BDC). When complete, it is expected to be home to more than 600 residents, who will be heavily drawn from the university’s student population, as well as from the ranks of young professionals throughout the Phoenix area.

The 410,000-square-foot building offers apartments on 17 floors. The other two floors house 25,000 square feet of retail and 6,550 square feet of restaurants. Ongoing interior work, which is 85 percent complete, focuses on installation of kitchen and bath cabinets and counters, and carpeting and painting.

Residents will have a wide array of floor plans to choose from, with residences including studios and one- to five-bedroom apartments. Units will include a range of modern features, from stainless steel appliances to 42-inch flat-screen TVs and sound-absorbing doors for a quieter environment.

Common-area amenities include a 40,000-square-foot amenity deck with two pools, 22-foot outdoor LED screen, fitness center with state-of-the-art exercise equipment and study and conference rooms. In addition, Hub on Campus offers outdoor Wi-Fi access to permit studies and meetings outside in the Arizona sun.

Employing more than 450 trade workers, Hub on Campus is also one of the larger current construction projects ongoing in Arizona. Construction has proceeded smoothly, says Andrew Beal, co-owner of BDC.

“Our pre-construction efforts definitely put us in a great position from a coordination perspective with the design elements,” he reports. “The project has shot out of the ground with an aggressive floor-to-floor cycle for the concrete structure. Both the exterior and interiors are progressing extremely well.”

“The project is coming along in an amazing way,” adds Ryan Cooney, project manager for BDC.

“Not only is Hub on Campus an outstanding project for BDC and our client, but it will have a positive economic impact for the city of Tempe in the long and short term.”

Developer Core Campus is positioning the apartment community to be the first choice of environmentally conscious students. In addition to being close to ASU’s Tempe campus and the city’s light rail system, Hub on Campus is also convenient to many shopping and dining venues, allowing residents the chance to enjoy a lifestyle largely independent of need for automobile transportation.

The integration of a number of LEED components puts Hub on Campus in line to earn LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council.

The architect on the project is HPA Architects, the structural engineer Sowlat Engineers, and Peterson Engineers handled the MEP engineering.

“BDC and its subcontractors are on track for a timely completion,” Beal concludes.
