In the 1930s a bootleg still exploded that caused the 2nd floor to burn. The owners from 1920 - 1970 were the Garcias. Late in the 1970s the downstairs was made into an art gallery (Arabesque) and the building was briefly an ashram. Later gourmet evening dining was downstairs at Maude's, when the owner's residence was upstairs. They remodeled the downstairs into an apartment after they moved Maudes uptown to serve lunches only. Maude was the name of the cat they owned."
